When an individual exhibits operant behavior, they are consciously engaging in actions that are often shaped by rewards or punishments, which serves to reinforce or discourage those behaviors in the future. For instance, if a child receives praise for completing their homework, they are more likely to choose to do homework voluntarily in the future due to the positive reinforcement they experienced.

In contrast, involuntary responses, reflexive behaviors, and unconscious actions do not involve the same level of intentional decision-making or environmental interaction and are not categorized as operant behavior. These types of behaviors occur automatically or are not under the individual's conscious control, which distinguishes them from voluntary responses that are central to the concept of operant conditioning.
